EASTERN
EGG ROCK
Location:
This 11-acre island in Muscongus Bay is located 6 miles east of New Harbor,
Lincoln County. (Approx. 20 minute drive south of Bremen.)
Egg Rock is owned by the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife
and is managed by National Audubon Society.
Access: Staff and supplies
are transported either by our Project boat or aboard one of two commercial
tour boats. The Project's 23' motor boat, Lunda III, is moored near
the Audubon Camp in Bremen. Operated only by qualified staff, it may be
used to transport research staff and/or supplies to the island. An
inflatable Avon with oars is kept at the island is used to row out to meet
the Lunda III. After mid-June, quick staff transfers or supply drops
may be done from the puffin tour boats.
Accommodations:
A 12'x12' cabin (affectionately known as the Egg Rock Hilton) is the hub
of the living quarters. Research equipment is also stored inside.
A kitchen area has a propane camp stove, light and tiny refrigerator.
A cassette player is wired to a 12-volt battery charged by solar panels.
Volunteers and interns must bring their own sleeping bag and ground pad.
If not scheduled as full-summer staff, you should also bring a tent.
There is an outdoor solar shower, but no toilet facilities.
Duties: The Island supervisors
will outline the specific projects underway when you arrive on the island.
Duties may include: daily bird counts, 3-hour blind observation stints,
bird banding and censusing.
Wildlife: Atlantic Puffins,
Common, Arctic, and Roseate Terns, Black Guillemots, Laughing Gulls, Leach's
Storm-Petrels and Common Eiders predominate. Early summer brings
migrant songbirds to the island while late July and August days are excellent
for migrating shorebirds.
Study
Projects: Monitoring restored tern and puffin colonies; Common
& Roseate Tern chick feeding study.
